Liebe FedCon

Liebe FedCon,

Was waren wir verliebt.

Letztes Jahr dann "Felicia-Gate".

Und weißt Du was?

Beste Grüße an Barrowman, Myles, Edgley, Black, Browder & Nicole :).

"You Rock!" a.k.a. FedCon Signatures

Since the flatmate and the Final-Episode-Avoider have already covered lots of the last FedCon-Event (plus, I kinda lack time for it) I'll stick to putting just a few comments on how my works were recieved.

First one was Mark Sheppard signing my "Backup"-Galactica from last year. "Great Work!" I felt a little sorry that I hadn't have the time to do a more special work for him and couldn't give him a copy. Especially since he was in a talkative mood and told me that he was in Berlin once and what he did there and stuff.

Richard Hatch seemed to be a little confused by the motive. (The one I did last year for him and Jamie Bamber). He started to sign it without a word and stopped midway through, reading the taglines he was signing on. He probably thought it was an illegal bootleg copy of a real comic book and didn't want to embarass me ;).

I don't really know whether Edward James Olmos liked his picture. He accepted his copy but didn't seem too overly impressed. Not sure whether he kept it. At least he wrote a complete novel ;).

Michael Hogan seemed more impressed. Olmos "warned" the fans in his panel the day before that Hogan never accepted Tigh being a Cylon and doesn't like it to be called one. So, uhm... yeah. Look at the right ;). "I'm very sorry for that headline... but you know how tabloids are... I'll give you your own copy to tear apart, if you like." He laughed and gratefully put his copy away. Maybe this one really liked his present.

When my work - wrapped in a neat wallpaper - was shown at his panel later on, fans shouted at him to turn around. "Hah, I signed one of those!" he remembered :). Thanks to the Final-Episode-Avoider for the following snapshots.

As you can see, the Callis one was shown as well (in fact, I've seen all three BSG-ones at the panels, thanks to the tech-guys), though he didn't see it on the screen. Nonetheless, he's the one responsible for the title of this post - he seemed really impressed by my work (resulting in his words on his signature - I never got a thank you on one of those before ;) ). "I will take that home with me, that's some great work - thank you very much!" PRIDE! :)

Getting his signature was quite an adventure by the way. Due to our lots of acquaintances even in the Con-Staff we knew that Callis would be gone on Sunday so we tried really hard to get his signature on Saturday. Trial one failed epicly when he had to leave for his photo-session 6 frakkin' people in the line before us. After one hour of waiting. Hmpfzt. Trial two was much easier because we were granted an exceptional visit to the official autograph session later on (as all "only-James-Callis-signature-Collectors" were). Lucky us, lots of fans didn't know and missed his signature.

Last one was Summer Glau, who still fought with a mean cold. She signed my work a little tired but seemed honestly surprised when I told her that's my work. So I'm too good now, my work isn't recognized as such anymore... ;). I gave her a copy, but I'm not sure whether she kept it.

As soon as I can decide about some neat gallery tool, I'll put HQ-Versions without the signatures there. Maybe even the whole panorama which was greatly enhanced due to the new background the Final-Episode-Avoider made for me. Thanks alot :).

Before someone asks: I copied the signatures from the prints into the digital works for better quality. Since Summer's was very hard to scan I had to trace her writing digitally - it's a little spidery now, the original isn't.

Pieces of Art (30): Phew!

Done. Don't mind the black bars, that's just for the desktop-wallpaper-format. Only few additions (Cover-Text, maybe flip the positions of Tigh and Adama... ) left; the main-work is finished. The tweaking is scheduled for the Easter Holidays, the complete art will be seen on FedCon 18 (and later on here). If I manage to find some way to print these.... ;)

And yes, I do know that River doesn't quite fit into the picture. I'll figure something out ;).

Pieces of Art (29): The Old Man

Two down, two to go.

It somehow confirmes my humble drawing-skills that the following occured in the process: I started penciling The Old Man without the wrinkles, therefore the drawing bearing not so much resemblance to him - but to Hotdog.... huh. You could think the actors playing Adama and Hotdog are kinda related... ;

I'm very satisfied with the work and the inking went noticeably faster. I grow accustomed to my Wacom :)

Pieces of Art (28): Gone Digital

Okay, I did it. I did it two weeks ago and bought the Wacom Intuos3 A5 Wide Screen Graphic Tablet. Pretty expensive (though not as much as the homepage suggests), pretty cool, pretty useful, pretty needs getting used to. First results on the left, a digitally inked and colored River.

Nothing new on the coloring front, I just relied on my old process of lots of layers. Went much faster than with the mouse, just as I hoped. In fact, I was much much faster with the coloring than with the inking. It took ages to "draw" over the pencils with the pen. It was pretty hard to draw lines on the tablet while looking at the screen, because you just see indirectly what you're drawing. Got faster at the end, I'm optimistic to master that when working on the next projects (being the pre-mentioned already finished pencils of Adama, Tyrol and Baltar). Hopefully I'll learn to draw convex curves with that, 'cause I can't turn the tablet like I used to do with the paper...

Anyway, the digital ink has very great advantages, illustrated below. I can experiment more - if you compare the inked face with the penciled one you see the difference. Details I couldn't have drawn with a fineliner plus the priceless ability to erase (yeah, my pen has an eraser at the back, just turn around and erase... :) ), enabling me to loosen myself from the pencils and just rework in the inking process. Well, let's see how Adama's face will turn out - since it's just a portrait the pencils themselves are more detailed and I can work on a deeper level...

Pieces of Art (27): WIP

Phew. After months of not touching a pencil using a pencil to draw - my last work was a still unfinished Dr. Horrible Pin-Up - I finally managed to find the time to relax and draw something again. FedCon is happening in a little more than two months after all. Lots of Stars attending, lots of signatures to hunt, so lots of work to do.

I'm very relieved that I can honestly say I didn't loose my humble skills over the unproductive months. River Tam on the left certainly wasn't the easiest start after the break, being a full pose with the jumping, the swinging, the coolness-y-ing 'n' stuff. Little harder than the usual portraits I did for the last con. Btw: Sorry for anyone trying to check out my previous art-stuff - it's temporarily offline since my university-webspace vanished into thin air after my graduation ;). It will be up on some new location soonish. Together with a new wordpress-blog ;).

I was able to sketch the pose pretty fast and with very few corrections afterwards. Still light years away from people with real talent but still much faster than I feared. The face went very smoothly (considering the little space I had for it, I used to have problems with that), thankfully no feet and only fists.

Her legs seem to lack a few centimeters and her left arm seems to be a tad thicker then her right - well it's just the pencil-sketch. Due to an existing income I plan to buy a graphic tablet in the next weeks, so River will be my first digital inking. Then I can experiment much more and correct those things without destroying the whole picture with a single wrong stroke.

Hope Summer appreciates it ;). Next up will be a Jayne-Pose for Baldwin and three portraits of Douglas' Tyrol, Olmos' Adama and Callis' Baltar, resulting in two covers (one Firefly, one BSG) to sign. Yeah, I gave up temporarily postponed the new Cylons-Poster, there's not enough time. For some better looks on River, see the Details-Sketch below.

Fedcon XVII: Sign this!

Due to an immense outbreak of Fedcon-Blues I just decided to continue blogging about the Fedcon before the weekend - starting with my own most important experiences during the autograph sessions. (Resulting in a kinda anti-climatic report-sequence... should save it for the last one... but I don't frakking care, I HAVE to write THIS down right now ;) ) At least I'll try to put the reactions of the stars to my drawings in ascending order - so my most precious moment will be at the very end of this report.

A few things first. If I catch ANYONE stealing those pictures and/or even present them as their own, I'll see to it that Marc "You film - you die!" B. Lee himself will kill you in the most painful way imaginable. By forcing you to listen to his german, slow weißbier-poisoning or spargel-breath-suffocation. This won't be nice! As long as you mention me (along with a link to this post ;) ) you are free to use them as you like. Would be nice to let me know where and to whom you're showing them per comment though.

If anyone is wondering about the fine quality of the pictures in comparison to the prints I exhibited at the art-show: The scans of those signed prints were surprisingly even worse - just add a greasy consistence to the already too dark colors and you get the idea. So I just cut out the signatures of the scans (digitally. You didn't really think I cut my precious drawings worth 105€ in money and unpayable amounts in personal value?) and put them into the high quality versions of the digital art. Works much better.

Aaaanyway. I think the least impressed was Bruce "John Sheridan" Boxleitner. He read the text with a big smile (a SMILE! from Bruce "serious face" Boxleitner! Very rare! Never seen that on Babylon 5! ;) ), asked if I did this and gave a little praise. "Did Mary see this?" he laughed. (She didn't at that moment, her line was longer ;) ) He gratefully accepted the prepared copy - I have learned since the Jewel Staite catastrophe last year - but I don't had the impression he'll frame it and put it on the wall in his living room ;).

And here I have to abandon my clever plan of mentioning the stars in order of the enthusiasm-level 'cause after this lead-in I HAVE to jump right to Mary "Laura Roslin" McDonnell. Well, I tried. Mary seemed a little exhausted, we noticed her taking breaks from the signing and looking tired before. But when my picture came up - probably after the umpteenth Roslin-photo ;) - she laughed out loud (in a suprised "What's this?! Coooool!" way) and examined it very thoroughly. "Battlestar... Babylon... Crisis of Infinite Presidents.... Who will save humankind....[..]" I know it's silly, but: There is no better reward for all the creative work than listening to the frakking president of the Twelve Colonies reading your lines out loud (okay, there is, but you'll have to wait till the end of this entry ;) ). Can't describe it. Hearing the voice connected with one of the most important roles of one of my favorite shows ever reading my stuff with a perceptible mixture of amusement and admiration - whoah! I had to explain to her who the guy is ("Ahh... Bruce!") and why I put him into the picture and when I gave her her copy she seemed surprised and very delighted. Probably still no framing, but I saw it in a sheet protector later on (probably done by a helper).

Jamie Bamber stayed cool but showed his appreciation by assuring me that he will show his copy to Richard Hatch, who had to stay at home due to filming schedule. Since I kinda assume that Richard will be attending FedCon XVIII next year, I will ask him if Jamie kept his word ;). Starstuff, if you're reading this: Yes, Richard Hatch is the old Apollo! ;) SCNR.

If someone happens to know the greek god Apollo personally, I could need his signature on the drawing. Would be very nice, if you could send him over. I would prepare some minor sacrifice but I kinda lack an altar or shrine. ;)

Okay, let's get to the girls. The very sweet Nicki Clyne was indeed so very sweet that I kinda forgot everything I wanted to tell her (4th season spoiler-stuff, sorry). At least I got my "Yes, I did this.","I have a copy for you, you can keep it." and "You're welcome." out. She seemed to like it. Yeah. Consider my quite negative surprise when I found out at Sunday evening that she gave it to her attendant (is that the right word? responsible helper? Hey what's the english word for "Starbetreuer"?). Deep inside I don't really expect that the stars appreciate my works as much as Gigi Edgley did at the beginning of my "career" but it's pretty nice to live in the illusion they do. I'm still sorta mad at the guy who - probably totally unintentionally, maybe even trying to compliment me - took that illusion from me. Don't worry, I'll get over it, but that hit me really hard :(.

Not so hard (in a much more positive way :)) than Leah Cairns' reaction though. I hereby demand more (helmet-less) screen-time for Racetrack! She is sooooooo sweet. Even before she bursted into squeals when she saw what she was signing. "Is that Cally?" - "Well, it's supposed to be Cally...." - "Oh-oh... and.. and that's me?" - "Well, it's supposed to be..." "THAT'S ME!" *pointing to her name on the bottom* "That's REALLY me!" - "Glad you like it.... I brought you a copy, you can..." - "REALLY?! *squeal again with glee* WHOAH THANK YOU!" Made my day. Made my whole con ;). And I saw her later taking the elevator with my drawing clutched in her hands (okay, I'm exaggerating, she just held it ;) ) - so I hope she's really keeping it. Considering her amazed reaction she probably hasn't got that much fan-art-presents yet. To quote her quoting some board-comment her mother discovered: "That girl can butter my muffin anytime!" And contrary to that other guy I like your nose, Leah. :)

I completely missed my chance to get a signature of Michelle "wrong surname" Forbes on my Galactica, but I survived. And saved 25€. :)

End of writing down precious moments related to my artwork. I think I'll continue with a very, VERY long entry about all the old and new faces (non-star) I met and talked with. Stay tuned!

FedCon XVII Prologue

Yay! Post #200! And yet just a little appetizer, since there won't be enough time for the beginning of the real report before the weekend.

FedCon XVII was one of the, maybe THE, best conventions so far. The stars, the tens of thousands of old and new people I met... whoah. Since I failed so miserably with last year's review I'll try another approach this time. The flatmate has already started posting her personal review which will be incredibly detailed (believe me, this girl evolved into a frakking typing machine during the trip home, I witnessed the whole thing) - and probably incredibly similiar to my own memories (well, duh! We saw the same panels, laughed at the same quotes and even shared the same notes ;) ).

So here's the plan: No chronological report. Just bits 'n' pieces, probably more focused on the few things, the flatmate won't cover (if any). I'm thinking of a series of specialized reports. The panels, the reactions to my drawings, the encountered old and new friends, to name a few that come to mind. Don't know yet - I really have to check with the flatmate what material she's not using in her report to spare you reading the same things twice.

So, if you wanna know about my new personal BSG-Godess' squeaks (dammit, I really SHOULD have done that frakking photosession with Leah and Nicki), what Firefly's Kaylee and B5's rangers have in common, how many guests did see Jamie Bamber naked and what the frak Brent Spiner has to say about Battlestar Galactica - stay tuned!

Battledraw Galactica (13): I want to paint it BLACK!

Whoah.

Battledraw Galactica (11): Action Grrrrrrrrrls!

Sodele.

Battledraw Galactica (10): Elections!

The effect was that of a Cyclopean city of no architecture known to man or to human imagination, with vast aggregations of night-black masonry embodying monstrous perversions of geometrical laws." an - 'n bissl vielleicht ;).

Okay, hüstel:

Consider me a fool. A fool for being played, a fool for not realizing the strange machinations of the Daedra Lords, a fool for being involved in matters beyond the reach of any mortal, a fool for being... a Thief. A rich fool, one may say. A powerful fool, one might add. A fool with good intentions, a fool succeeding in her tasks, a fool correcting mistakes made hundreds of years ago - but a fool nonetheless. For now I'm stuck with this strange thing, still glowing with the dark power it once possessed, it's remnants still eating at it's owner even with the wretched curse removed.

Ja. Das war's auch schon. Das ist JETZT die Gelegenheit, "Boah neeeee! Tu's nicht, Batch!" zu schreiben.

Ladies of Interest (6): Nora Tschirner

Nora Tschirner for Fedcon! Ha! Hier ein hübscher "Trailer":

Battledraw Galactica (9): Presidential Meeting

Pfuhh.

"What are you - the We-hate-Patrick-Stewart-Fanclub?"

Hier dachte ich an eine Ausgabe von "The Legendary Adventures of APOLLO, Son of Zeus" in "Lords of Kobol, Part IV of XII". Mit fetzigen Reißern wie "Apollo & Apollo - will they help EXPOSING the FALSE GODS of OLYMPIA'S dire Future?", "Are they the Harbingers of DOOM?!" und "WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE!".

Danach wäre dann was für den Somerhalder dran, wahrscheinlich eine schöne "The Final Fate of the Red Shirt" Hommage.

;

Sachen gibts...

Sign this! (1)

Ladies of Interest (2): Morena Baccarin

Gleich vorneweg: Mogelpackung!

Joss Whedon hats einfach drauf. (Die sollen in a special level of hell schmoren, jawoll!)

Two by Two. Hands of Blue. Two by Two. Hands of Blue.

FedCon XVI, Part 2: Four guys for a polaroid film

Phew, spare-time at last! Previously on Batch's FedCon XIV-Review: Arriving in Bonn! Getting shot a thousand times! (By Steffi's Photo-Camera) Meeting the Thursday-Gang! Helping Steffi thinking of questions ALOT! Waiting for FedCon-Excitement!

Friday! The first to wake up after what feels like half an hour of Batch-sleep (thanks again, hurting leg, for the great night we two had) is of course Not-Yet-But-Soon-To-Be-Turbo-Mode-Steffi, tumbling over the rest of the sleepers into the bathroom. We are allowed to rest a few seconds longer, after which our host returns with breakfast and panicking outbursts (which will be occuring several times all over the weekend). The press conference begins at 10 a.m. and although "our" convention doesn't start before noon, we spoantaneously decide to join our still struggling reporter.

We arrive again at the Maritim Hotel around 9 a.m. We are instantly overwhelmed that the queue for the economy ticket attendees is non-existant. The delight is even greater when we realize that dear friends await us at the counter: Sessi (Tanja) and Matze! Matze decides to start the VERY FUNNY game of teasing me by calling me constantly by my real first name which he just had discovered (after all of the years it was secretly looming under all my posts at the stboard). Steffi proudly presents her two arm-bands - we sink slightly unimpressed into the armchairs, waiting for being allowed into the con-area.

Hours pass by. I help Sabrina with her old-west-nordic (or was it east?) vocabulary (it's even less interesting than it sounds - but hey, quality time with a nice girl ;) ), read the con-magazine about five times (discovering horrible typos and other mistakes, as well as completely unnecessary information like Jewel Staite's marital status. Who wants to know that she's married? NO ONE DOES!) and fail to notice that Jewel is walking by - thus loosing the "who spots the first celebrity" game (pfft, only because Richard Arnold didn't count). Steffi disappears surprisingly calm to the press conference and we meet our new FedCon friend Jan, labeled "our Dane" from there on, who's joining us in the waiting ceremony. Angie manages to slip prematurely into the con-area to provide robse with her B5-videos. We buy our Con-packages and I score more points with Sabrina by giving her my precious FedCon-pin :).

12 a.m. Finally! We rush in - aiming for the first panel of the rarely-invited Richard Arnold... NOT! Instead I steer directly to the art-exhibitions were I plan to exhibit my drawings. I soon find a good spot for "Cylon Dilemma", "Transformations", "Our girl", "Dress-code" and "Cybermen-Dalek Team-Up". Steffi returns proudly from the press conference and shows a few pictures she took. I scout the permanent autograph session nearby to get my biggest worry confirmed: No Jewel is listed on the board. Since with my economy ticket I won't get into the official autograph session tomorrow, my only hope to get an autograph of her on my drawing are my dear helper-friends at the counter. Angie joins into my lament - no Armin Shimerman as well - but shortly after leaves for the autograph session of Avery Brooks and Jonathan Frakes. Looking at the queue I decide to join the other girls at the Holodeck, where Hertzler and O'Reilly do their klingon-thingy again.

The chicken-joke. AGAIN. At least with the very entertaining Suzie Plakson as the narrator. The guys are still funny though and announce the arrival of Martok and Gowron the next day. We're thrilled and leave just in time to bare witness of Angie getting her autographs. Guess what, Steffi bans this moment on digital celluloid. Instead of giving Orli Shoshan's panel a chance (I really feel sad about that, since I won't get to know her all the weekend), I spend some time in the merchants' room drooling over some Doctor Who merchandise which I can't afford. One of those sonic screwdrivers will be mine someday! (never know when you need one) We try out the affordable meals outside the main bridge and risk a last look at the permanent autograph session... JEWEL IS THERE! Would be even better, if James Callis... well. Within fractions of seconds I grab my drawing of her and present it at her table. What will she say? Will she like it? Or will she nag about it like Nicole DeBoer did last year? Stay tuned...

Just kidding, no break today. Jewel likes my drawing so much, she aks to keep it. Too much for the simple batch-brain to handle. I come to my senses a few meters from the table, the signed drawing clutched in my hand. Eye-witnesses claim to saw I refused to give her the picture - probably because of the info about her marriage I've read earlier. I gave her agent/assistant/guy beside her (he was with Clare Kramer last year, I envy this guy...) my email-adress though, so she could ask for a digital copy (which hasn't happend till today, btw. I'll probably write her a message at her myspace-site). Sorry Jewel, but I only give away originals to very close friends... and Michelle Trachtenberg ;). Next Con I'll have a bunch of copies of my works with me.

Angie and I visit the TrekDinner Meet and Greet for a couple of minutes and enjoy a few of the trailers, before leaving to the mainbridge to get some good seats for the opening ceremony. Some Laura Bertram is holding her panel there, the Andromeda chick I've almost never seen before. This girl is a sorceress. Or a mage. A shaman, a druid or some other type of magic user. After mere seconds of listening to her, I'm under her obviously maxed-out 9th grade enchantment spell. "Mass-charm con-attendee" probably. Laura tells us in her unique way about a Kevin-Sorbo lifesize standup with a sign saying "Hi, I am halfpriced because my sword is bent!" and describes her most embarrassing moment (after stboards Darth.Hunter aks her about his force lance):

"[...] So - the people at the front desk [of the hotel] now know, there are two blond girls who have gone up to the plastic covered room with the guy from "Flesh and Fantasy". [..] ...and then the worst thing happens: He [the body-cast-artist] runs out of polaroid film. He calls the front desk. [..] Do you know that it took four guys to deliver that one package of polaroid film?!"

It takes me the whole screening of the Making of "Kurzzeithelden" after her panel to get rid of her spell - wow, what a girl. Little do I know that she will get even better tomorrow and I will ultimately do something I never did on a con before. We get a very special premiere exclusive trailer of the Transformers Movie (which everyone interested enough had seen at the worldwide web weeks ago), before the opening ceremony begins. Everyone of the guest-stars has arrived (well... James Callis...), Armin Shimerman gets more applause than Kare Mulgrew and Avery Brooks.

After the opening, a Jonanthan Frakes who must've ate a whole circus of clowns, rocks the house by goofing around like Brent Spiner couldn't in his best years. While slowly building a "reasonable facsimile of the bridge of the enterprise" out of three chairs, he answers questions about X-Factor ("the greatest job ever! I just had to walk around and read stuff from the teleprompter!" - "Was that stuff true? Of course!"), tells about Marina Sirtis' running gag dog Skelagi ("this is NOT a dog!") and lets us in into the secret of his beard ("... 12% of the left side..."). At the end of his panel - Angie and I are hurting very much because of the constant laughter - he finally shows us the reason for the "bridge". A great perfomance of a battle situation follows and he does an impersonation of Patrick Stewart: "25 years of the Royal Shakespeare Company for THIS?!"

I won't describe the Cirroc Lofton + Avery Brooks double-panel afterwards in detail. (I will, however, do catch up on this matter on a later point). Brooks made a big impression on me a few years ago, but at this panel his never-ending mental cuddling with his "son" is too much for me.

We are reunited with Steffi and Sabrina outside who hold a much bigger grudge for Avery since they missed a Garret-Wang-Panel because he overrun his panel last time he was at FedCon. We meet a lot of friends like the ever bright Moka and our Dane, but after Steffi finds her master in power-talking we leave to get a little sleep before the next, party-intense day. Unfortunately we have to take the ONE night-bus that obviously EVERY adolescent in Bonn and Cologne has to as well. A very uncomfortable ride home later and being smashed to 2D-images of ourself we sink in our beds. We have to be at the Hotel for the first panel tomorrow - it's Garret Wang's and the S-girls won't miss him another time!
